That getting a Porsche 944 is a good idea. Here's my list.
1. Baller Status (Porsche, Duhhhhhh)
2. I could totally pull of the 911 look, Without actually being rich.
3. Pop up lights.
4. Cheap as hell.
5. Fun.
Downsides:
Two old German cars.

A few Opponauts have them too. so why not.

DO IT! *
*person saying "DO IT" will not help you pay for upkeep/repairs/mods, and is drunk.

As a former 944 owner I will try my best to answer your questions here.
1. Baller Status (Porsche, Duhhhhhh)
Yes, people will regularly ask you what it is that you're driving and will stop you and ask you questions. However, actual "car guys" will know what's up.
2. I could totally pull of the 911 look, Without actually being rich.
Eh... not so sure about that one.
3. Pop up lights.
Valid, and they're easily some of the most reliable pop ups in pretty much any car made.
4. Cheap as hell.
Cheap as hell to buy... to maintain not-so-much unless you wrench yourself and know how to scout ebay and craigslist for good used parts.
5. Fun.
YES. So fun, I loved mine and it's driving dynamics immensely. I have a miata now but there was something about the 944 and how solid it felt down the twisties that the Miata can't exactly match.

I want a 944. Have since the first time I saw one in person. They're aging like fine wine. I would also like a much higher income to justify said purchase. So please, buy one and then you can convince me later not to buy one. Everyone wins

Ditto

yes damn it yes!!
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:19 |

Because
1. You want to join my regime. :)
2. You can look fancy and rich without having a 911!
3. Pop up lights
4. They go up and down and up and down and up and down...
5. A fun cheap classic!
6. If a poor college kid can afford one, so can you! :D
And I've got two old German cars!
So yes, it's a wonderful idea!!
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:19 |

I still want a purple one. Though I'm crazy enough to want an early 928 more.

Rusto, buddy, wanna help me out? ;)
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:21 |

Not a bad idea, just make sure you find one that's well kept. They're really very reliable & pretty easy to work on, but a couple of jobs are complicated and some parts are expensive so most are scared off. The S2 is my favorite, but they're hard to find and more expensive. Just find a clean 86 or newer with the much improved dash & have fun.

As a current 944 owner..
1. I agree with all of this .
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:23 |
|
Thanks for the list!
I do wrench myself about 95% of the repairs I do, Are done by yours truly. I do have expirience with older VAG products, So pretty much nothing scares me now.
I'd just like something with a ton of character, for not a lot of money. I feel that older cars have so much more personality, and if a 944 could talk......
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:24 |
|
Haha, pls halo remain patient.
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:26 |

Then you're pretty much set. Just make sure to buy the nicest example you can afford instead of going for a "project". Replace timing belt ASAP and you will love your 944 immensely. 944's have tons of character, there are very few cars out there like them and they will always hold a special place in my heart as the first real "enthusiast" car I bought. They are actually quite reliable if you stay on top of maintenance. Do you have another car?
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:32 |
|
Here's why you should buy a 944.
1. Look at it!
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:37 |
|
can't
You need Porsche naow
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:40 |
|

![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:42 |
|

![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:44 |
|
you only love me for my monies ;(
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:46 |
|

![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:47 |

![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:47 |

![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:49 |

DUDE. Just buy a Z!
Just as fun to drive (I think)
WAY cheaper to fix. I know this for a fact.
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:51 |
|
he's so awesome! Doesn't it look like he was super imposed into that pic ?
![]() 01/17/2015 at 23:53 |
|
Indeed he does!!
:D
Soo....
Can you gib me monies pls..
![]() 01/18/2015 at 00:00 |
|
I only convince people to find 240Zs before they get more expensive! My dad has had a 911 SC since I was born, its a good car but half the cars at classic meets are Porsches. But if you love em you love em.
![]() 01/18/2015 at 00:55 |
|
Do it!
You'll have a redundant array of Porsches,; you can always drive your Porsche if the other one is in the shop. I did this with Corvettes, once. Each Corvette had a license plate holder which said "my other car is a Corvette" to enhance my douchey-ness.

![]() 01/18/2015 at 08:54 |

Thanks for the advice!
I have a '97 A4 also, So the plan would be to drive the A4 most of the time and use the 944 for fun. Plus whenever it would be out of commission, I wouldn't be too mad because I'd have another car.
![]() 01/18/2015 at 08:55 |

Thanks for the advice!
![]() 01/18/2015 at 08:56 |

Haha, Yay! I can join the K-Roll regime!
![]() 01/18/2015 at 08:56 |
|
I knowwwww, But I can't find any without massive quantities of rust!
![]() 01/18/2015 at 09:01 |
|
Do it. My dad had 86 and 87 944 turbos while growing up. Then a few years ago he bought me an old ragged 87 944 turbo, with a few mods... that thing would spin the tires everyone boost kicked in.
![]() 01/18/2015 at 20:26 |
|
no
The urge is good
You must have 944 now
![]() 01/18/2015 at 20:28 |
|
because I can't send people monies
Then I would have no monies
And I still have so much debt to pay off
I'm a autoholic with massive amounts of debt
![]() 01/18/2015 at 20:34 |

Me Want, But me need money to buy nice one :)
![]() 01/18/2015 at 21:35 |

![]() 01/19/2015 at 15:16 |

you can always sell your body to old women with money on the weekends ;)
![]() 01/19/2015 at 17:22 |

Haha, I'd just get a 911 if I had to do that.
![]() 01/19/2015 at 18:20 |

991 GT3?
991 GTS?

do you have enough garage space to park it inside?
![]() 01/19/2015 at 21:04 |
|
I actually do. My A4 sleeps in there sometimes. I've got a two car garage, With a one car door. I just need more funds, Haha.
![]() 01/19/2015 at 21:37 |
|
YESSS
If you have garage space then this buy is a no brainer!
It's an investment
Even if you don't have monies to fix it up now then you can just garage it until you do!
Insurance is super cheap if you non-op the car
![]() 01/19/2015 at 21:42 |
|
If only I had the cash, Hope they don't decide to go up in value two years from now :)
![]() 01/19/2015 at 21:54 |
|
but they will :(
can you borrow from your credit card?
air cooled 911s are not a cost, they are an investment!
they are going up by the day
![]() 01/19/2015 at 21:55 |
|
I always try and pay in full. Less financial burden, Haha.
Hopefully I'll find a good one for sub $15,000 next year around this time. :P
![]() 01/19/2015 at 22:07 |

You are the Opposite of me, haha
I am quite fond of loans
![]() 01/20/2015 at 07:28 |
